Tonawanda Creek
Lower Section in Niagara County and Erie County.

Western New York Outdoors home

Description:

Tonawanda Creek is a major tributary of the Niagara River and acts as a boundary between Niagara-Erie County.  A unique and diverse community of wildlife thrives in this scenic waterway.  The western end of the current day Erie Canal lies at the mouth of Tonawanda Creek at the East Branch of the Niagara River.  It is 90 miles long starting in western Wyoming County.  Popular for boating, fishing or nature viewing with several harbors and access sites.

The Erie Barge Canal completion in 1825 helped grow the twin cities of the Tonawandas as a corridor of commerce and culture.  At first, mule and horse teams hauled the freight barges on towpaths but were replaced by steam tugs.  The western terminus of the New York State Canal System became a major lumber distribution port by the 1880's.  Today it is a recreational and historic resource.

Providing public access to the waterway is the Amherst Veterans Canal Park, entrance is on Brenon Road off Tonawanda Creek Road, and Mayor's Park off Sweeney in NT.  Both provide picnic areas with fishing access and boat launching sites.  Also, visit the West Canal County Park.
