Western New York Outdoors
A Parks and Recreation Guide to locations for outdoor adventures in WNY.

Rock City
State Forest in the Town of Little Valley, Cattaraugus County.

Western New York Outdoors home

Description:

There are over 6,000 acres of woodlands and natural rock formations here to explore.   There is a picnic area at the end of Little Rock City forest road and several trails to hike.  Passage ways, caves, boulders make this area a very scenic place to visit.

There are also several mountain biking trails throughout the forests.  This is one of the best mountain biking trail systems in the area.  Also a very popular and rugged hill country for turkey hunters.  Between Salamanca and Ellicottville (off 219), you are near the Holiday Valley and Holimont ski areas.  From Rt. 219 take Route 242 and make a left on Whig Street, then a left on Hungry Hollow Road.  Make a right on Little Rock City Forest Road, at the yellow barrier, and travel to the end parking and picnic area.  You will also cross over the Finger Lakes/North Country Trail.

Continuing on Hungry Hollow Road, passing Little Rock City Forest Road, the next left is the McCarty Hill / C.C.C. forest road.  Further down on Hungry Hollow Road is Camp Seneca with trail head for the Finger Lakes Trail and several mountain bike trails.  McCarty Hill leads north to a fire tower and Mutton Hollow Road which will complete a large loop back to Whig Street near where you entered the forests.  These hilly roads can be a tough ride without a 4x4 when on a wet, muddy or snow covered road.  Highly recommend going during dry conditions or be prepared for some adventure.  Beware the crevaces near the boulders, and be safe.
