Western New York Outdoors
A Parks and Recreation Guide to locations for
outdoor adventures in WNY.
Onondaga Escarpment
State Unique Area in the Town of
Newstead, Erie County.
Description:
This parcel of land, off Scotland Road northeast of Akron, is owned by NY
state and was acquired due to its special natural beauty, wilderness character,
geological, ecological and historical significance as a natural preserve.
This region of physical assets extends east-west thru Buffalo (Serenity Falls)
and Fort Erie to the Albany Helderbergs, parallel to Route 5 and the north
shoreline of Lake Erie. The area between the larger Niagara Escarpment and
Onondaga Escarpment is the Tonawanda Plain, this is where you hear about all
those sinking home problems in Amherst.
Some notable geographic features,
such as ridges of Devonian age limestone rock, that are exposed by several
waterfalls are Akron Falls, Buttermilk Falls (LeRoy),
Glen Falls (Williamsville), Indian Falls (Gulf Wilderness Park), and the Linden
Fault (the only formation that causes earthquakes in WNY). There are also
a variety of rare plants in this area.
