Nine Mile Swamp
Unique Area in the Towns of Carrollton, Allegany and Great Valley, Cattaraugus County.

Western New York Outdoors home

Description:

This area is made up of two state forests: Windfall Creek and Nine Mile Creek.   They total over 4,300 acres of rough stony lands, small wetlands and hardwoods (black cherry, red oak, white ash, sugar maple).  Good for hunting primarily deer and turkey.

Windfall Creek was named after a terrible tornado where the winds devastated the timber of the Great Valley area in the early 1800's.  Located in Great Valley on Thorpe Hollow Road and Windfall Road, off Route 219, by the Allegany Indian Reservation.  The reforestation area has hiking trails and wilderness camping.  There is a picnic area with parking and opportunity for fishing at Twin Ponds, south of Windfall Road, and on some streams that support natural brook trout (Thorpe Hollow).

Nearby is the Nine Mile State Forest in the Town of Allegany.  It is located further down Route 219, past Carrollton, to Route 417 toward Olean on North Nine Mile Forest Road.  Phearsdorf Forest Road is also public accessable.  Gypsy Moth and Porcupine forest roads are gated.  This is near the hamlet of Vandalia.  This area has an extensive trail system for mountain biking.  Fishing (Nine Mile Creek and Bowers Hollow), snowmobililing and cross country skiing are other common recreational uses.
