Gone Fishin'

Description:

The Niagara River flows northerly from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario.  It is 35 miles long and the border between the USA (New York State) and Canada (Ontario Province).  It is probably most famous for the Niagara Falls and connector to the Erie Canal, but also for its history, international bridges, power plants, shipping, recreation and world class fishing.

It is one of the best steelhead rivers anywhere, with plenty of trophy size lake trout and brown trout.  Salmon, walleye and muskie are available too.  Some popular shore fishing sites are at Joseph Davis State Park, Fort Niagara State Park, Lewiston Landing, Artpark State Park, NYPA Fishing Platform, Devil's Hole State Park, Whirlpool State Park, Griffon Park, Gratwick Riverside Park, Fisherman's Park, Niawanda Park, Isle View Park, Aqua Lane Park, Ontario Street Boat Launch, East River Marina, Lasalle Waterfront Park and Towpath Park.

This region is generally divided into four areas starting from the south and moving north:

  • Upper River
This is where the Peace Bridge connects us to our neighbors to the north in Canada from the City of Buffalo.  The Lake Erie Ice Boom is located here to prevent damage downstream to the power intakes.  Squaw Island is nearby and includes the Bird Island Pier, Broderick Park and International Railroad Bridge.  The Riverwalk provides public access and is a link between recreational areas along this boundary.

  • Grand Island
This area splits the Niagara into a west/east river including two state parks, Beaver Island and Buckhorn Island.  Other nearby islands are Strawberry, Motor and Navy.

  • Niagara Falls
A worldwide tourist attraction and spectacular natural wonder.  There are actually three waterfalls, the Horseshoe Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and American Falls at Niagara Reservation State Park.  The Niagara Gorge starts here and has the popular Maid of the Mist boat rides.  The Niagara Power Project, Rainbow bridge and Whirlpool are also in this area.

  • Lower River
This section is along the Robert Moses State Parkway.  The Lewiston boat launch, Artpark and historic old Fort Niagara are here.  Finally, the river feeds Lake Ontario at the Youngstown harbor.
