Western New York Outdoors
A Parks and Recreation Guide to locations for
outdoor adventures in WNY.
Letchworth
State Park in the Town of Castile,
Wyoming County.
Description:
Established since 1906, the park follows along a 23 mile section of the Genesee River
valley. You can
enter from Castile (year round), Mount Morris, Portageville or Perry. Many people call
this state park the Grand Canyon of New York.
There are three waterfalls
in the southern section,
Upper Falls, Middle Falls and Lower Falls, along a scenic gorge area called the
Portage Canyon. The
forests and scenic views are particularly attractive during the Fall season as
the foliage becomes very colorful. You can camp, hike (The Gorge
Trail), bike or raft along
with numerous other activities.
The history and scenic view from Portage Bridge, several hundred feet above
Upper Falls, over the Genesee River valley is spectacular. The Mount
Morris Dam in the northern section of the park is historic as well. The Genesee River empties into Lake Ontario north of Rochester. Open all year
around, this over 14,000 acre state park is great to visit any time of year.
