Western New York Outdoors
A Parks and Recreation Guide to locations for
outdoor adventures in WNY.
Lake Ontario
The Western Basin extends from Buffalo, New York to
Rochester with shoreline along Niagara County and Orleans County.
Description:
Lake Ontario is the eastern most and smallest in surface area of the five
freshwater Great Lakes with 4 times the volume of Lake Erie. Measuring
approximately 193 miles wide and 53 miles north to south. The average
depth is about 283 feet, 800 feet at its deepest point. It outlets to the
St. Lawrence River and the Atlantic Ocean. Numerous outdoor recreation
activities, such as hiking, canoeing, birding, fishing, and sailing, are enjoyed
in the Niagara Frontier.
Fort Niagara is one of the oldest US lighthouses and was setup in 1818 to aid
navigation. It was built by the French at the mouth of the Niagara River.
It is a registered national historic landmark. The State Park offers two
boat launches for access, trails and picnic areas.
There are several locations along the Lake Ontario shoreline offering scenic
views and recreational opportunities. The Niagara County Town of Porter
has Fort Niagara and Four Mile Creek State Parks. Traveling eastward to
the Town of Wilson is the Wilson-Tuscarora State Park. In the Town of
Newfane is Krull County Park. The Town of Somerset, at the village of
Barker, has Golden Hill State Park. Orleans county has Lakeside
Beach State Park and Oak Orchard State Marine Park in the Town of Carlton.
