Western New York Outdoors
A Parks and Recreation Guide to locations for
outdoor adventures in WNY.
Hiltonville
State Forest in the Town of Birdsall,
Allegany County.
Description:
Coming from Route 16, turn onto Route 15B and you will cross over Black
Creek and pass the Birdsall Inn. You will then make a right onto a gravel
road, Hiltonville Road, and continue to the State Forest. This is a
heavily wooded area and mostly undeveloped. The Canisteo River crosses
over Sullivan Road here. There is a small pond further down Sullivan Road,
hidden in the forest along a trail, near a NYS DEC marker.
Nearby, twice the size and just
north of Hiltonville, is the Gas Springs State Forest. This is also a very
remote wilderness area. It is common to see hunters during turkey and deer
seasons here. Always respect the many private properties located near
these and any state land borders.
