Description:

The Erie Canal Heritage Trail is the 90 mile long developed segment of the Erie Canalway Trail in WNY.  This multiple use trail runs east to west from Lockport to Palmyra.  The Erie Canal is one of four parts to the 524 mile long inland waterway across New York State.  Trail uses include boating, hiking, biking, skiing, and horseback riding.

The Erie Canal starts at the Niagara River between the Tonawandas, at Gateway Park.  It opened in 1825 and today is a recreational corridor that is very scenic and a historical resource.  There are many points along the way that intersect local roadways.  Many with trail heads that contain kiosks with information, parking and maps.  The trail is designated as a National Recreation Trail.  Experience a great American tradition and explore the New York State Canals System.
