Western New York Outdoors
A Parks and Recreation Guide to locations for outdoor adventures in WNY.

Ellicott Creek
Town of Amherst, Erie County.

Western New York Outdoors home

Description:

Named after Joseph Ellicott of the Holland Land Company.  The NYS DEC stocks the creek with rainbow trout for fishing.  Angling access is available at Ellicott Creek Park, Ellicott Creek Island Park (canoe launch) and Glen Park.  Popular for canoeing from Bowmansville to Island Park with good bass, panfish and pike fishing.

Amherst State Park is on Mill Street, immediately north of Glen Avenue, in the Village of Williamsville.  The former Gothic convent, now housing the park offices, and narrow valley was recently acquired in 2000.  The park system is owned by the NYS OPRHP but maintained by the Town of Amherst.  Used for passive recreation and conservation.  The park includes wooded areas, meadows, orchards and nature trails along Ellicott Creek for hikers, bikers and skiers.  South of the old convent, thru the orchard area, there is a bridge that crosses over the creek.  This trail leads to the historic Reist Mill.  The southern trail goes to Glen Park and a popular waterfall.

The Ellicott Creek Bike Path is a seven mile trail.  It starts at a parking area at North Forest Road and Maple Road, in the Town of Amherst.  It travels northwest thru UB, on the west side of the creek, and over several bridges.  Eventually you will go under Interstate-990.  Now on the east side of the creek, it continues to Ellicott Creek Park at Niagara Falls Boulevard in the Town of Tonawanda.
