Western New York Outdoors
A Parks and Recreation Guide to locations for
outdoor adventures in WNY.
Chestnut Ridge
Park in the Town of Orchard Park,
Erie County.
Description:
The oldest county park has been great fun and open all seasons for 80 years.
In the winter time you can sled, toboggan, ski and during the other seasons you
can hike or bike numerous trails. The park has abundant picnic areas,
groves, wildlife and facilities to enjoy, including the Casino Building.
You can also hike along Shale Creek to the Eternal Flame waterfall off Seufert
Road. The Commissioners cabin has a nice pond, but the area is only
available via reservation, no fishing access otherwise.
There are many characteristic structures such as grand stone buildings, bridges, water pumps,
an old monument on a knoll, and the historic 100 Steps (behind shelter 12) in our largest and busiest Erie County park.
Some restoration and maintenence efforts have begun recently improving the parks
declining appearance.
