Chautauqua Lake Region

Gone Fishin'

Description:

Chautauqua Lake is about seventeen miles long, two miles at its widest and offers many scenic view points.  It is also one of the finest angling waters in WNY for muskie, walleye, bass and panfish.  There is a Hatchery near the village of Mayville, northern end, that produces annual stock.  Public boating and fishing access are available, ice fishing is very popular during the winter.

The Southern Tier Expressway (Rt. 17) slices the lake in half near Bemus Point.  The northern basin is deepest and the southern basin shallower with depth ranging from 10 feet to 75 feet.  The lake drains southeast into Chadakoin Creek, the Allegheny River and eventually to the Gulf of Mexico.  There are numerous attractions in this fruit growing region surrounding the lake and Jamestown lies on the southern end.
