Western New York Outdoors
A Parks and Recreation Guide to locations for
outdoor adventures in WNY.
Boyce Hill
State Forest in the Town of
Franklinville, Cattaraugus County.
Description:
Take Route 16 south to Franklinville, turn right on Route 17, then make a
left onto Jackson Road. This woodland and hilly area is currently being
partially cleared for timber. There is a small parking area at the end of
the road with a turnaround and a small pond along a trail thru the conifers.
There are a few other nature trails for hiking.
Other Nearby Areas:
Ischua Creek has numerous public fishing access areas from Machias along Route
16 south to Maplehurst. The NYS DEC annually stocks this stream and there
is also a good wild brown trout population. North of Franklinville, near
the intersection of Rt. 16 and Rt. 98, Johnson Creek and Carpenter Brook
flow into Ischua Creek.
Bear Creek State Forest is located in the Town of Machias. Turn on Upper
Bear Creek Road from Route 16. A section of the Finger Lakes Trail passes
thru this area.
Bryant Hill State Forest is located in the Town of Franklinville.
Bird Swamp is a lowland area where numerous waterfowl can be observed.
Take Route 16 to Route 242 and make a right on Maple Valley Road.
Case Lake is located south of the village of Franklinville, a very scenic lake
with a boat launch. NYS DEC stocked with brook, rainbow and brown trout.
