Western New York Outdoors
A Parks and Recreation Guide to locations for
outdoor adventures in WNY.
Allen Lake
State Forest in the Town of Allen, Allegany County.
Description:
This is a man made lake for fishing and motorless boats, 50 surface acres big. Traveling west
from Allen Center on Muckle Road you turn
right, at a dirt road (Vincent Hill Road) to enter from the south. There is a
small parking lot and boat launch. I have caught good numbers of fish here, trout,
largemouth bass, bullhead, gillies and sunfish. It is NYS DEC stocked with
rainbow, brook and brown trout. The deepest section, around 25 feet,
appears to be along the rocky dike. Wigwam Creek provides an outlet for
the lake.
On my last visit in September of
2003, the vegetation was overgrown near most shoreline locations making it difficult
to fish. A small electric motor boat or canoe would have been ideal to access the prime
areas.
